Smelling Cologne …
Yesterday the neighborhood smelled of coffee … a strong breeze of it caught me as I stepped out of the Hof and onto the sidewalk and I actually spun myself around with my nose up in the air trying to find the source of it. The aroma was everywhere.
There was another strong scent in the air yesterday as well … the sun was bright and strong and it baked the pine bark mulch in the flowerbeds. So powerful it was and clean and warm all at once.

Baked Pine mulch! that sounds really good. The coffee in Cologne must be pretty good too... I never gave much thought to German coffee(The best cup I ever had was in Vienna, so I'm imagining Germany has their own way with coffee too)
Hope it wasn't Starbucks. Hamburg's starting to be overrun with them, much like London.
Are you sure you weren't momentarily in Seattle? This whole city smells like a mixture of pine trees and coffee... kinda a "camping in the morning" feel.
And then you realize that it's a work day and you have to battle the freeways and the parking fees -- just the same as LA.

DCB ... The best cup I've ever had was in Vienna too ... It's not bad here but the smell yesterday was from someone's kitchen I believe - home style.
Ian .. I don't go there - ever.
Carol ... I may have been having a Seattle moment!
I just intended to send a short "hello" regardless of the post itself. Reading your posting, however, reminded me that I took a walk at the Spree that day, smelling the quite strong scent of it, mixed up with the fresh air of spring time...
(And good to read, that you won't ever go to Starbucks... ;-))
Coffee! huh, that's the one thing I remember not liking very much on my last trip back to Germany. I found that they didn't really have very good coffee, it smells good but doesn't really taste that great. I'm a bit spoiled though, well alright, lots spoiled when it comes to my favourite brew...ciao
Sandy ... Hello back at you ...
Ros ... This was the smell of coffee in the air - in my neighorhood - not a professional coffee smell at all but something wafting out a kitchen window early in the morning. A real wake-up and sip it in your bathrobe kind of smell ...
aahh
this post is so tactile!
i could (almost)smell the coffee!
partly also because i'm working and am meeting a friend for coffee in a few hours and i can't wait!!
p.s. true to what i think of German, the language, you are very interesting! i love your blog already!
